The letter was written before the Prince of Orange's ascension to the throne of England in 1689 along with his wife Mary, his first cousin whom he married in 1677. They served jointly on the English throne. Anne, Queen of Great Britain 1702-1714, was the last Stuart monarch. Raised as a Protestant, she was convinced to support the efforts of William of Orange and her sister Mary to depose her Catholic father, King James II.
